Teen Therapy with Horses: Self-Discovery & Emotional Regulation for Teens in PA

Self-Discovery and Emotional Regulation for Teens in Pennsylvania

Being a teenager is complicated. You’re expected to have it all figured out—who you are, what you want, how to handle your emotions—but the truth is, most days it feels like you’re just trying to keep up. Maybe you’ve noticed yourself reacting in ways that surprise you, or struggling to put words to what’s actually going on inside. You might feel stuck between who you used to be and who you’re becoming, unsure of how to navigate everything in between.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And there’s a place where you can explore all of it without judgment, without pressure to have the right answers—just space to discover more about yourself.

What Is The Inside Out Herd? Equine Therapy for Teens

The Inside Out Herd is a six-week equine therapy group designed specifically for teens and adolescents who want to better understand themselves and learn how to manage their emotions with more awareness and confidence. Led by Dr. Danielle Moore, PhD, LPC, LBS, a licensed professional counselor specializing in teen therapy and adolescent development, this group uses hands-on experiences with horses to help you explore what’s happening on the inside—your feelings, reactions, and the patterns that shape how you show up in the world.

And before you wonder: no, you don’t need any experience with horses. You don’t even need to love horses (though you probably will by the end). The horses are there as partners in your journey of self-discovery, offering something that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Why Equine-Assisted Therapy Works for Teens

Here’s the thing about horses: they’re incredibly honest. They don’t care about your social media profile, what grades you get, or whether you said the wrong thing in class yesterday. They respond to what you’re feeling right now—your energy, your emotions, the way you carry yourself.

When you’re anxious or overwhelmed, they might become alert or step back. When you take a breath and ground yourself, they often calm down too. It’s like having a mirror that reflects your inner world in real time, helping you see patterns you might not notice otherwise.

Horses also teach you things that are hard to learn in traditional teen counseling: how to set healthy boundaries, how to communicate clearly and confidently, how to be present instead of stuck in your head, and how to trust yourself. These aren’t just “horse skills”—they’re life skills that follow you into friendships, family relationships, school, and everything else.

What Happens in Teen Equine Therapy?

The Inside Out Herd isn’t about sitting in a circle talking (though there’s some of that). It’s about actually doing—working with the horses in mindful, hands-on activities that help you explore who you are and how you respond to the world.

You’ll learn about:
  • Emotional awareness and regulation: Discovering what’s happening inside you before emotions take over, and developing practical skills for managing anxiety, anger, and stress.
  • Body awareness: Understanding the connection between your physical sensations and emotional state—a crucial skill for teen mental health.
  • Healthy boundaries: Learning to set and maintain boundaries in relationships with peers, family, and yourself.
  • Authentic self-expression: Practicing how to show up as yourself instead of who you think you’re supposed to be.
  • Calming and coping skills: Developing real-world techniques that actually work when stress hits.
You’ll do all of this in a supportive group where other teens are figuring out the same things. Dr. Danielle Moore creates a space where it’s safe to be honest, to try new things, and to grow at your own pace. The horses meet you where you are, and so does she.

For Parents: Why Equine Therapy for Adolescents Matters

If you’re a parent reading this, you know how hard the teen years can be—for your teen and for you. You might see your teenager struggling with big emotions, withdrawing, or acting out in ways that seem to come out of nowhere. Traditional teen counseling doesn’t always work for adolescents who feel uncomfortable talking about feelings or who shut down in an office setting.

Equine-assisted therapy for teens is different. It’s experiential, which means teens learn by doing rather than just talking. The horses create natural opportunities for emotional growth, self-awareness, and regulation—skills that are essential for navigating adolescence and beyond. And because the setting is engaging and hands-on, teens are often more open and motivated to participate than in traditional therapy.

The Inside Out Herd gives your teen a chance to develop emotional intelligence, build confidence, and discover who they truly are in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. It’s an investment in their mental health and their future.
