Confidence and Connection for Preteen Girls

Something shifts for a lot of girls right around this age. The confidence that came so naturally at seven or eight starts to quiet down. She might start second-guessing herself, shrinking to fit in, or going along with things she doesn’t actually want just to avoid conflict. You might notice her getting quieter in rooms where she used to be loud, or watching other girls before deciding it’s safe to speak.

This is exactly the age where that pattern can either take root or get interrupted. There’s a place where your daughter can practice being fully, unapologetically herself — before she learns to be anything less.

Why the Preteen Years Matter So Much

The preteen years are a hinge point. This is often when girls first start absorbing the message that being liked matters more than being honest, that taking up space is risky, and that their worth depends on how others respond to them. Left unaddressed, those patterns don’t stay small — they follow girls straight into the teen years, where the stakes and the pressure only get higher.

That’s what makes this window so valuable. Preteens are old enough to genuinely build real skills — communication, boundaries, self-trust — and young enough that those skills can take root before high school social dynamics make everything harder to unlearn. Take the Reins meets girls right at that hinge point, while there’s still real room to shape the pattern instead of just reacting to it later.

What Is Take the Reins? A Confidence Group for Preteen Girls

Take the Reins is a four-week equine group for preteen girls ages 8–13 focused on building confidence, communication, and healthy relationship skills. Led by a licensed professional counselor, this group uses hands-on experiences with horses to help girls find their voice and practice showing up as themselves — with people and with horses.

No horse experience necessary. This group is about connection and confidence, not horsemanship skill.

Why Horses Help Preteen Girls Build Real Confidence

Horses are enormous, honest, and completely unimpressed by social performance. They don’t respond to who a girl is pretending to be — they respond to her actual energy, body language, and follow-through. That makes them uniquely powerful partners for building confidence that’s real, not performed.

When a girl sets a clear boundary with a horse and it works, she feels that in her body — not just in theory. When she communicates assertively and a 1,000-pound animal responds, that’s proof she can trust herself. That kind of embodied confidence is exactly what’s hardest to build through conversation alone, and exactly what tends to fade first at this age.

What Happens in Take the Reins?

Over four weeks, girls work directly with horses in guided activities that build:

  • Confidence: Discovering her own capability through hands-on experience, not just being told to “believe in herself.”
  • Assertive communication: Practicing how to say what she means clearly, without apologizing for taking up space.
  • Healthy boundaries: Learning what a real boundary feels like to set and to hold, even under social pressure.
  • Authentic self-expression: Practicing how to show up as herself instead of who she thinks she’s supposed to be.
  • Healthy relationship skills: Recognizing the difference between relationships built on mutual respect and ones built on people-pleasing.

Each session is led by a licensed professional counselor alongside a certified equine professional, creating a space where girls can be honest, try new things, and grow at their own pace.

For Parents — Why This Group Matters

You may already be noticing the shift — a daughter who used to speak her mind now hesitating, deferring, or shrinking in ways that don’t feel like her. That’s not something you can talk her out of. It has to be rebuilt through real experience, at an age where it can still take hold before it hardens into a lifelong pattern.

Take the Reins gives your daughter a space to practice boundaries, voice, and self-trust while there’s still real room to shape who she’s becoming — not who she thinks she needs to be to stay likable.

You're Worth It

Confidence isn’t something she’s born with — it’s something she builds. The version of her that speaks up, holds her ground, and knows her own worth is already in there; she just needs the chance to practice being her, out loud. She doesn’t need permission to take up space. Take the Reins gives her the place to find that out for herself.
