Grief Counseling

Why Bring Horses into Grief Therapy?

When grieving, we sometimes struggle with isolating ourselves, cooping ourselves up, and withdrawing from the world. We seek distractions to avoid our grief. Horses are not only comforting to be around – they invite us to just be present with them. When we slow down and become present, we are able to face our feelings with the supportive presence of these soothing creatures and a compassionate therapist.

Grief manifests as physical pain because our emotions and our bodies are inseparable. Our clinical approach is to address all parts of our being: body, mind, soul, and spirit. Movement through walking, stretching, or riding can help you process emotions on the physical level and emotional level at the same time. The peaceful, natural surroundings soothe your nervous system with a beautiful visual sensory experience. Being able to sense emotion, horses respond honestly to grief, and regularly join our equine therapy sessions to bring connection and comfort by standing near, nudging, or walking alongside.

Complicated bereavement and complicated grief occur when the loss has impacted your life so negatively that you are struggling to get by each day. This severe, or prolonged grief may feel like it is controlling you. Talking alone doesn’t access the areas of our brain that hold grief emotionally and physically; so incorporating physical movement and emotional processing in an environment where your nervous system feels safe, seen, and connected with others is an important part of healing.

What Happens in Grief Counseling?

Just like in any of our Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy sessions, each session is tailored to your unique goals. Grief therapy sessions often include activities such as:

  • exploring emotions around your situation or loss to increase insight
  • developing coping skills for grieving well, including strategies for your unique situation
  • movement, mindfulness, or creative activities that are meaningful
  • figuring out how to adapt to your new reality – it’s never the same, but it too can be meaningful and good

When to Seek Grief Therapy

Grief is such a common human experience – everyone experiences loss at some point in their lives. Everyone experiences grief uniquely, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. However, many of us need help to overcome overwhelming grief. We aren’t meant to grieve alone. When should you seek therapy for your grief?

  • when grief is making you unable to function as you would normally, or had been before the loss
  • when you feel unable to manage daily tasks of living or self-care
  • when you are experiencing appetite loss, physical pain, or sleep problems
  • when you are experiencing hopelessness, despair, extreme anger, or suicidal ideation
  • when you have trouble making decisions or concentrating at school or work, or in usual activities
  • when you have a lack of support or people with whom you can share your feelings openly
  • when you feel disconnected from others or find yourself isolating
  • when you no longer enjoy activities you once did
  • when your thoughts persistently are focused on your loss
  • when you persistently avoid thinking about your loss
