Take Heart Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy
Master's Level Counseling Intern,
Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Lebanon Valley College
Training with Natural Lifemanship (Trauma-Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy)
Lexie is a graduate counseling intern at Take Heart who works with children, teens, young adults, and families seeking guidance, confidence, and emotional balance. She specializes in supporting kids, teens, and young adults building resilience, individuals navigating anxiety, and those exploring purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their lives. Alexa also works with individuals and families of all ages who are healing from the impacts of past trauma.
While she is a graduate intern, Alexa brings strong clinical training, evidence-based skills, and extensive supervision from experienced licensed counselors. She has hands-on experience in counseling settings and receives ongoing guidance to ensure every client’s therapy is safe, effective, and tailored to their needs. Parents and clients can feel confident that Alexa combines fresh energy, the latest research-based practices, and structured professional support to provide high-quality care.
Alexa believes deeply in the healing power of connection—both with others and with animals. She integrates her passion for animals into her work, using equine-assisted therapy to help children, teens, and families develop emotional awareness, self-confidence, and stronger relationships. Working with horses provides a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can practice communication, regulate emotions, solve problems, and build trust—skills they can carry into everyday life. Families often notice that equine-assisted sessions help children open up, practice collaboration, and experience small but meaningful victories, boosting motivation and resilience.
Her approach is collaborative and client-centered, focusing on helping children and teens navigate challenges in a way that feels empowering and supportive. Alexa enjoys guiding clients through self-discovery, personal growth, and meaningful connections, helping them build positivity, confidence, and a sense of balance in their lives.
Alexa earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2023 and is completing her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Lebanon Valley College, with an expected graduation in spring 2026. She began her graduate internship at Take Heart because it perfectly aligns with her passion for mental health and her love of working alongside animals. Following graduation, Alexa plans to pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania.
She is also pursuing certification through the Natural Lifemanship Institute, gaining specialized training in trauma-informed, evidence-based equine-assisted psychotherapy, which complements her work with clients who benefit from experiential, non-traditional approaches to therapy.
Outside of counseling, Alexa enjoys spending time with family and friends, often alongside her two dogs, Tucker and Tyko, and her bunny, Toby. She loves being outdoors, whether taking quiet walks in nature or enjoying fresh air. She also explores her creativity through pottery, country line dancing, gardening, and baking—practices she models as ways to maintain balance and joy in everyday life.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

What Horses Did For Me…
Horses have given me a profound sense of purpose in my life and career. Before joining Take Heart, I often felt overwhelmed and unsure about the direction I wanted to take with my counseling studies. It wasn’t until I discovered equine assisted therapy that I began to find clarity and direction, realizing that God had a purpose in leading me here. Working with horses has shown me how much they can promote healing, personal growth, and humility. Their intuition and ability to reflect the goodness within others continue to inspire me and shape both my personal and professional journey.
