Moments of Connection
Moments of Connection happen all the time...

Moments of connection happen all the time, all around us. Often, we are so caught up in our fast-moving world that we forget to watch out for them. The ranch, especially, is a place where special moments of connection can happen often, if only we slow down to notice them.
What do I mean by “moments of connection“?
I mean those moments where someone or something truly sees you, hears you, and is present with you for who you are in that moment. In these moments of connection, we no longer feel alone in the world. It heals a part of us that maybe we didn’t even know needed to be healed.
Before I start with this story- you should know that my relationship with Noble is so special to me. Over the years, he has taught me some of the hardest and most meaningful lessons about life and myself. He has also provided me with a deep connection and a sense of safety when I have needed it most. Some of these lessons and special moments I have shared on our Facebook Page, and some I am saving for blog posts and for the book Take Heart will write one day. I truly believe that God has placed him in my life and given us this special relationship for a reason.
I had a moment like that recently with Noble that I actually noticed- check it out.

I was in Field 4, needing some alone time to process things. I had a rough day, so I sat in Field 4 to just be. I wasn’t really looking for anything from the horses other than to just watch them as they did life and feel their presence.
A few minutes into my time of sitting in the field, Noble came around the fence from the hay feeder, saw me, and walked over to me. We made eye contact and I could tell we were connected- I just had that feeling and he had that look in his eye. He passed by me, nibbled on some grass close to me but not too close. He didn’t come over to engage with me.
While I was a little bummed he didn’t come over and nuzzle me, I was ok with it. I was still processing and Noble wanted to graze. I didn’t think too much about it.

I didn’t pay much more attention to Noble until a few minutes later, I realized most of the herd had moved further into the field, but Noble was still close. He was near the fence line I was leaning on, just under 5 posts away. He had done a kind of half circle and was facing me again.

Did you know horses have an electromagnetic field that can reach up to about 40 feet away from them? They can sense someone’s energy from about 40 feet away. Noble was right on the edge of that; he was just under 40 feet away.
This whole time while I thought Noble had moved on, he was still connected. Still sensing my energy and emotions. He was feeling what I was feeling with me. Right around that moment when I noticed him still within that range is when the tears started coming and I finally released what I was holding onto.
What did Noble do? He made his way back to me. Not in a rushed way, but he slowly worked his way back while grazing. And then he just stood close by while grazing. He never nuzzled me, he didn’t ask for scratches, but he was there, grazing close by, letting me know that I’m not alone.

In that moment, I was his herd mate who needed support. He didn’t communicate in a way humans typically like to communicate with horses (the physical touch and affection), he didn’t gallop over to me like as if in a movie, but he saw me as his herd mate and invited me into that safety.
I never felt more connected to him than I did in that moment. It was so subtle that I almost missed it, but I’m glad I didn’t.
What is a moment of connection you have experienced recently?
How can you be more aware of them?
